NFL Star Drafted By Newark Middle School
Danny Clark Encourages Good Nutrition & Increased Physical Activity
It’s back to school for Giants’ linebacker Danny Clark. On Friday, June 19th, Clark made a special appearance at George Washington Carver elementary school in Newark to talk to students about good nutrition and even played a little flag football to encourage physical activity as a reward for the school’s participation in the NFL and American Dairy Association’s “Fuel Up To Play” program.
The “Fuel Up to Play” program, piloted in ten Newark middle schools this year, is a nutrition and fitness initiative designed to reverse the rising rates of childhood obesity by putting kids in charge of their future health. Recognizing that schools are uniquely positioned to support healthy change in youth, the “Fuel Up to Play” program engages and encourages students to get the foods and physical activity they need to excel.
With the highest rate of participation in the “Fuel Up to Play” program in Newark, students at the George Washington Carver school initiated programs to encourage students to play for 60 minutes daily and increase consumption of nutritious foods that most children don’t eat enough of, such as low-fat and fat-free milk and dairy products, fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
Representing the NFL, Clark addressed the entire student body Friday morning at 9 am and recognized ten students who served as the school’s health and wellness ambassadors with autographed merchandise and an impromptu game of flag football. “Professional athletes like Danny Clark really drive home the message to students that good food choices and physical activity are important part of daily life,” says Aisha King, Child Nutrition Specialist with the American Dairy Association.
